Babies exercising???
There has been a lot of talk lately about lack of exercise as an infant and toddler being a contributing factor in childhood obesity. As you know by now, we here are Forward Strides are huge proponents of exercise and getting children moving. But, I feel the word exercise in these latest reports is misleading and may cause many people to disregard this useful information.
Let’s put this in perspective. Exercise for infants and toddlers is not “exercise” as most of the world knows it. We are not placing toddlers on treadmills, forcing infants to balance in a plank position. The word exercise in these reports should be replaced with “movement”.
The problem is lack of movement in toddlers. Thanks to DVR, DVD, Cable on Demand, and YouTube your child’s favorite show is ALWAYS on, making it easy to place him/her in front of the TV for long periods of time. As parents we must accept responsiblity for keeping our children moving, teaching them that play is fun and to spend time running around with your children. This may even be the motivating factor in getting yourself back in shape.
It is much easier to allow your child’s natural need for exercise to blossom by providing the outlet then to get them on a diet and real exercise program as young children to help them lose the weight that may be causing them harm.
Do what I say, not what I do simply does not work. Children’s behavior is dictated by what they see rather than what they are told. Anyone with a 2 year old will tell you that their child will mimic them all the time.
I have made it a point to exercise in front of my two year old. I am not a fan of the exercise programs on TV. But I follow along with them when my daughter is around. She now asks me to exercise all the time and joins in.
If we are to reverse this horrific trend of rising obesity rates in children we, as parents, must lead by example! Start slow if you are not use to exercising, a walk everynight after dinner is the perfect way to get into the habit of exercising with your son or daughter.
